Metabolic Psychiatry:

A Different Way of Thinking about Mental Health

Metabolic psychiatry is an emerging field that explores the relationship between metabolism and mental health.

Rather than viewing psychiatric symptoms solely through the lens of neurotransmitters or diagnoses, metabolic psychiatry examines how factors such as brain energy metabolism, insulin signaling, inflammation, mitochondrial function, and nutrition may influence emotional well-being and psychiatric illness.

For some people, addressing these underlying biological processes may become an important part of treatment. I support patients with ketogenic diet therapy when appropriate.

Metabolic Psychiatry with Dr. Flynn

I provide metabolic psychiatry consultations for adults in Los Angeles and throughout California via telehealth.

  • I completed clinician training with Dr. Georgia Ede and have a particular interest in the growing field of metabolic psychiatry.

My work integrates metabolic psychiatry with psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and whole-person psychiatric care. Treatment begins with understanding you as an individual—your symptoms, history, physical health, lifestyle, and goals.

Depending on your situation, our work may include discussion of:

    • Nutritional psychiatry

    • Metabolic health

    • Ketogenic therapies

    • Medication management

    • Psychiatric medication tapering

    • Psychotherapy

There is no single intervention that works for everyone. Treatment is collaborative, individualized, and guided by both scientific evidence and your personal values.

  • One area of particular interest within metabolic psychiatry is the use of ketogenic therapies for certain psychiatric conditions.

Emerging research suggests that nutritional ketosis may influence brain energy metabolism, neurotransmitter systems, inflammation, and mitochondrial function. While not appropriate for everyone, some individuals are interested in exploring whether ketogenic therapy may play a role in supporting their mental health.

  • People seeking a metabolic perspective often struggle with:

    • Depression

    • Anxiety

    • Bipolar Disorder

    • Treatment-Resistant Symptoms

    • Brain Fog or Cognitive Difficulties

    • Questions about the relationship between physical and mental health
